Celebrate the changing seasons and reinforce a bit of phonics practice while you’re at it! Coloring doesn’t have to be all about being inside the lines or using proper colors. Coloring can be a very relaxing activity when kids don’t have the pressure to color something perfectly.
Fall Coloring Page Uses & Coloring Tips
This F is for Fall Coloring Page is especially useful in homes or classrooms that employ a letter of the day or letter of the week theme, but honestly it works in any learning environment!
Coloring is a calming activity that is almost universally enjoyed by kids and grown-ups alike– there’s a reason why coloring books for all ages have taken the world by storm! Some kids settle into coloring comfortably and without fuss.. others need a little encouragement!
I’ve found the best way to help an active child settle down is almost never to set a coloring page in front of them. The trick is to sit down and color with them! And then I find myself getting all relaxed too.
To really get into the fall spirit, try simmering some cinnamon and cloves in a small saucepan of water and fill your home with a nice spicy fall smell! You can further encourage calmness by turning on some relaxing classical music while you color with your child.
After you practice coloring together this way a handful of times, you can start offering your child coloring pages on their own. You may still want to color together with them at first, but after a couple of minutes you can get up and ask your child to finish their coloring while you do some chores.
For some reason the phrase “Mommy needs to do some chores” is one that my kids don’t usually question. Maybe because even my really active kids would rather chill and color than do chores ha!
F is For Fall Coloring Page and Lesson Plan Ideas
Spend a day or week immersed in the “F is For Fall” theme! Print out this fall coloring page and talk about all of the things on it- what do they have to do with fall? Remember that the pictures aren’t of words that start with “f!”
You can take the phonics practice one step further by using the items on the coloring page! Ask your student to identify the beginning letter sound of each word. Point to the barn and ask your child, “does ‘barn’ start with ‘f’?” Be very clear with your letter sounds and emphasize the “b” sound in “barn.”
It could be fun to have two copies of the fall coloring page available to your kids. One of the coloring pages can be for whatever colors they want to use, and the other coloring page can be done after a conversation about the colors of fall.
If you don’t live in an area where the seasons have obvious changes, get some books about fall from the library and/or look up pictures of deciduous trees online (bonus: teach your kids to use the word “deciduous” in a sentence!). After looking at those, pick out a few crayons that reflect those beautiful fall colors. Kids can then complete a second coloring sheet in fall-themed colors!
