These three simple games to teach left and right will have your child giggling and learning all at the same time!
Simple Games to Teach Left and Right
Developing practical skills is so important for real life. We believe in equipping our young ones with a variety of practical skills from a young age (like safe knife skills!)- learning left and right is an excellent skill to start with!
Here are a few simple games that will help you each your child left from right and will have them enjoying the process at the same time!
Tapping Game to Teach Left and Right
Stand behind your child and tap their right arm and say “this is your RIGHT arm”, repeat on the left side saying “this is your LEFT arm”.
Do the same thing with their ears, legs, shoulders, and so on… until they can say which is which when the part is tapped.
Be sure to smile and giggle while you do this, and if you can get progressively faster in a silly manner, your kids will be cracking up in no time too!
When your child can say “left arm” when you tap their left arm, you are good to move on!
Sticker Activity to Teach Left and Right Shoes
Learning left from right is especially important for kids as they learn which shoe goes with each foot! You can do this sticker activity in one of two ways. The second way is demonstrated in the picture below.
- Place different colored stickers in each shoe:
- Lime green = Left
- Red = Right
- Take ONE symmetrical sticker (like a heart, circle, square, etc.) and cut it in half. Place each half in the correct shoe, so that when the shoes are in the proper placement, the sticker is whole!
Simon Says Game to Reinforce Left and Right
Once your child has a good grasp on left versus right, you can start giving them silly orders for left versus right! You can just give the silly directions for fun or incorporate them into a round of “Simon Says.”
For example:
Wiggle your right hand in the air! Stomp your left foot!
Grab your right elbow!
OR
Simon says, “Flap your right arm!”
Play the first game for a few minutes a day and then incorporate the other games too- your kiddos will know left and right before you know it!
