Make Way for Ducklings is one of those classic, simple children’s stories that everyone wants to enjoy again and again. Written and illustrated by the same author as Blueberries for Sal, the story is similarly sweet and the illustrations are equally beautiful.
It’s incredible how simple it is to take a story your family loves and use it to create an enriching and gentle learning experience. Make Way for Ducklings Reading Discussion
Read through the story one time with your child, then ask a few of the following questions.
Round 1 Questions:
- Who are the main characters of this story, or who is this story all about?
- Where does the story take place?
- What are they looking for?
- Who helps the ducks cross the busy streets?
If your child is willing to read the story again right away, do so and ask some of these additional questions. If they are not, take a break and come back to the story later.
Round 2 questions:
- What was your favorite part of the story? Why?
- How did you feel when the Police Man helped the ducks get to their new home safely?
- What are some things we might feed the ducks if we saw them?
Make Way for Ducklings Math
Another day, use Make Way for Ducklings for a simple math lesson:
Count the ducklings each time they are mentioned. How many are in the whole family including the mommy and daddy ducks?

Now that you’ve read the story a few times, learn about real ducks! Research some overall information about ducks- try YouTube, the library, or a simple Google search. Look for answers to some of these simple questions:
- Do ducks migrate?
- Can ducks fly? Can all birds fly?
- Do ducks lay eggs? Do all birds lay eggs?
Make Way for Ducklings Hands-On Activity
Get some hands on experience with ducks with a hands on activity! Go feed the ducks in a local park or simply observe them.
If you do feed them, keep snacks healthy – like the peanuts mentioned in the book. Avoid processed foods as they are not good for ducks and can mess up their digestion.
