Finding board games for kids that are age appropriate and hold their attention can be tough. But this adorable preschool board game is perfect for ages 2-5!
This board game was recommended by a friend, so I grabbed it off Amazon (thank you Prime shipping) and it was in my hand within 2 days.
I was on the brink of a breakdown if I had to play another round of Candy Land!
This game is called The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel and it’s just about the cutest board game I’ve ever seen!
It’s labeled a “strategy game for kids” and we were anxious to try it out! My preschooler’s big brothers are obsessed with complicated, in-depth strategy games and we needed a strategic preschool board game in the game closet!
Preschool Board Game for Kids Review
One of the things I really like about this preschool games, is that there is no reading required! So, even if your child isn’t reading yet, they can still fully participate and not feel like they are being “babied” as you read for them.
The object of this game to is fill up your tree with one of each of the colored acorns.
It may seem simple enough, but there are a few obstacles that might make it a little difficult for you!
Spin the spinner and follow the space you land on, which will either allow you to pick up 1-2 acorns, steal acorns from another player, skip a turn, or lose all your acorns to the storm!
The Sneaky Squirrel: This spot allows you to steal any acorn that you are lacking from another player.
The Sad Squirrel: Skip your turn if you end up on this spot!
A Storm: Uh-oh!! A storm blows through and you lose all your acorns.
House Rules Options for This Preschool Board Game
While these rules will work for the vast majority of kids, some kids aren’t ready for competition or trying to “take” things from another player.
When I was a teacher I regularly modified game rules so that everyone in the class could enjoy the games we played!
When it comes to something like a simple, just-for-fun game, it’s okay not to abide exactly by “the rules!”
Sometimes when my kids are bickering, I actually seek out a cooperative game or a cooperative way to play a game we like just to get everyone back on the same page.
Here are two house rules that can work for The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Game:
1. If you land on a color spot you already have, spin again. Sometimes the game can drag on if you keep spinning and landing on a color you already have, so this helps move things along. Of course, you run the risk of a storm coming! But hey, it’s better than doing nothing, right?!
2. If you don’t want to steal an acorn, you don’t have to. Some children are especially sensitive to the feelings of others, and may perceive this action as mean. In that case, feel free to simply skip it!
Most kids are just going to see it as normal game play, so only modify if necessary!
How Long Does this Board Game Last?
The time it takes to get through the game depends on how many players you have playing, and whether or not you use the house rules above.
House rules tend to cause the game to be a bit faster, since you aren’t skipping as many turns, or losing as many acorns to other players.
However, one typical round of gameplay with 2 people is about 10 minutes. With 3-4 people it ends up being about 15ish.
Generally, we play at least 2 rounds before we move on to something else!
I definitely recommend this board game and you can grab your own copy of The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel here if you want to give it a try!
